About Us

Technology has the power to transform our lives. This was true with the invention of penicillin, electricity, and the internet. Innovators keep moving forward with breakthroughs in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, stem cell and cancer research, renewable energy, and ever-more complex semiconductors.

We were founded as NKT Photonics by scientists and engineers, driven by a passion for photonics. Today, we are the Lasers & Fibers Business Unit within the Hamamatsu Photonics Group. Our name is Hamamatsu Photonics A/S.

While our name is new, our mission remains the same: to improve life for humanity through photonics innovation. We support innovators in quantum technologies, life sciences, semiconductors, and security with high‑performance fiber lasers and specialty fibers built by our brightest minds.

We have lasers in space and deep under the oceans. Our products run in cleanrooms and on oil rigs. We seed the World’s largest laser fusion experiment and power thousands of the most advanced microscopes across the Globe. Our product portfolio includes supercontinuum white light lasers, low-noise fiber lasers, ultrafast lasers, and a wide range of photonic crystal fibers.

Headquartered in Denmark, Hamamatsu Photonics A/S is part of Hamamatsu Photonics Group, a global photonics leader with more than 6,600 employees worldwide. All our products are manufactured under rigorous quality control, with ISO 9001 certification across our production sites and ISO 13485 certification for our Swiss facility.

We are here to help you push the boundaries of what is possible. Our lasers and fibers are made to take your ideas from the lab to the real world, where performance and reliability rule.

Our four market segments

We develop innovative solutions with multiple applications. These technology-leading solutions are tapping into sustainable megatrends that will support growth opportunities for the company going forward.

Medical & Life Science

Medical & Life Science is the fastest-growing of our four market segments. Ultrafast lasers are finding particular use in ophthalmology, while supercontinuum lasers enable cellular research and new medical diagnosis methods.

Main applications for Medical & Life Science are:

  • Bio-imaging & microscopy
  • Ophthalmology

The Medical & Life Science segment is predominantly driven by a growing and aging population as well as a general increase in living standards around the World, leading to increased demand for ophthalmic and other medical procedures.

Industrial

Industrial is the largest segment of our main markets. Customers in this segment use the full breadth of our product portfolio, including ultrafast lasers, sensing systems, and supercontinuum lasers.

We serve a wide range of subsegments and applications within the Industrial segment, such as:

  • Semiconductors
  • Remote sensing
  • Device characterization, sorting, and quality control

The Industrial segment is predominantly driven by a general megatrend of increased technological complexity, not least in the semiconductor market.

Aerospace & Defense

We utilize our entire portfolio of products and capabilities to serve special project needs, focused mainly within the European and US markets.

Our advanced fiber laser technology enables laser systems that are light and robust – critical features for deployment on mobile platforms like planes, ships, and ground vehicles.

The main applications include:

  • Directed energy
  • Aerospace
  • Remote sensing

The Aerospace & Defense segment is predominantly driven by an increased focus on security and asymmetrical threats.

Quantum & Nano Technology

Quantum technology covers a range of fast-growing segments within quantum computing, sensing, metrology, and communication.

Nanotechnology covers applications within the development of advanced materials such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, metamaterials, plasmonic structures, and quantum dots. Finally, the segment includes several scientific instrumentation applications.

The main applications include:

  • Quantum computing, sensing, and metrology
  • Characterization of advanced materials and nanostructures
